The languages of cinema: the key to code-switching on-screen

As part of BFI Future Film Festival we’ve put together a panel of filmmakers to discuss the power of multilingual films, and how to do it right.

In this session we welcome filmmakers embracing more than one language in their dialogue to walk us through everything from script-writing, translating, accents and choosing between offering subtitles or keeping monolingual audiences in the dark.

Speakers:

  • Isra Al Kassi - Co-Founder/Programmer, T A P E Collective

  • Asena Nour - filmmaker (See You in the Dark, My Mother’s Mother)

  • Alannah Olivia - filmmaker (Ego, Taarof)

  • Paul Sng - filmmaker (Folding, Little Warrior)

Host: Kim Sheehan - Programmer, BFI
